# Glossary

> Platform and maritime terms used across Seamind OS

**Assignment**
A crew member's placement on a ship with a role and date range. Training is assigned through assignments. See [Assignments](/learn/admin/assignments).

**Certificate**
A seafarer's professional credential (STCW, GMDSS, medical, flag, etc.), uploaded to their crew profile and tracked with an expiry date. See [Documents & certificates](/crew/documents-and-certificates).

**Course**
A single training module consisting of slides and a quiz. See [Courses](/learn/admin/courses).

**Crew**
The people in your organization, synced automatically from your identity provider. Also the name of the [Crew product](/crew) — the digital records those people own.

**Crew profile**
A seafarer's record in Seamind — personal details, identity documents, certificates, experience, and next-of-kin. See [Your profile](/crew/your-profile).

**Directory Sync**
Keeps Seamind's people list in sync with your identity provider (Okta, Microsoft Entra ID, etc.). Changes in your directory appear in Seamind automatically. See [Identity & SSO](/learn/admin/identity-and-sso).

**Entitlement**
A product your organization has access to. Entitlements are managed per organization; locked products appear greyed out in the app.

**Fleet**
The collection of ships in your organization. Each ship has a name and IMO number. See [Fleet Management](/learn/admin/fleet-management).

**Identity document**
A government-issued document on a crew profile — passport, visa, seaman's book, or national ID. See [Documents & certificates](/crew/documents-and-certificates).

**IMO Number**
A 7-digit identifier assigned by the International Maritime Organization to every seagoing vessel. Used globally to identify ships regardless of name changes or flag transfers.

**Intelligence pillar**
One of four operational areas in Seamind OS: Crew, Vessel, Regulatory, and Voyage Intelligence. Each pillar groups related products. See [The product suite](/product-pillars).

**Organization**
The top-level container for everything in Seamind — ships, crew, training, and records. Created when your company onboards.

**Product**
A distinct application within Seamind OS (Learn, Crew, Tutor, …), grouped by intelligence pillar and enabled per organization. See [The product suite](/product-pillars).

**Program**
A named collection of courses that form a training curriculum. Assign a program to add all its courses at once. See [Programs](/learn/admin/programs).

**Registration**
One person's progress on one course — tracks status, quiz score, attempts, and time spent. Each row on the Progress page is a registration. See [Tracking Progress](/learn/admin/tracking-progress).

**Role (platform)**
A person's access level in Seamind — **Admin**, **Office Admin**, **Office Employee**, or **Crew Member**. Managed in your identity provider, not in Seamind. See [Identity & SSO](/learn/admin/identity-and-sso).

**Role (ship)**
A crew member's rank on a vessel (e.g. Captain, Chief Officer, Chief Engineer, Able Seaman), set when creating an assignment.

**Seamind OS**
The full Seamind platform — multiple products across four intelligence pillars, sharing one fleet, one crew, and one login. See [Platform overview](/platform-overview).

**Sign on date**
The date a crew member boards a vessel to begin their assignment.

**Sign off date**
The date a crew member leaves a vessel at the end of their assignment.

**SSO (Single Sign-On)**
Lets crew sign in to Seamind with their company credentials (Okta, Microsoft Entra ID, Google Workspace, etc.) — no separate password. See [Identity & SSO](/learn/admin/identity-and-sso).

**Tutor**
Seamind's AI assistant, surfaced in the app as "Ask Seamind". Answers maritime and course questions in plain language. See [Tutor](/products/tutor).

**Verification**
The office's confirmation that a crew member's uploaded document or certificate is genuine. A profile rolls up to one of four states — Incomplete, In Review, Action Needed, or Approved. See [Verification status](/crew/verification-status).
